Identiv Secures BLE Smart Label Deal on Fresh Food Packaging Containers
Identiv Inc, a NASDAQ-listed provider of RFID and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-enabled Internet of Things solutions, has signed an exclusive agreement with IFCO, a leading fresh food container company, to develop and supply smart BLE labels.
The labels will be integrated across IFCO’s global network of more than 400 million reusable packaging containers, used for over 2.5 billion shipments of fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, bread and other items annually. For IFCO, the labels represent a move towards more intelligent, data-driven logistics.
BLE is a wireless communication standard designed specifically for low-power, intermittent data transmission.
Unlike ‘classic’ Bluetooth, which is optimised for continuous connections (such as audio streaming), BLE is engineered to send small bursts of data while consuming minimal energy. Devices can operate for months or even years on a small battery, making the technology particularly suited to distributed, large-scale deployments such as logistics assets.
In practical terms, a BLE smart label periodically ‘broadcasts’ its identity. These signals can be picked up by nearby smartphones or fixed infrastructure, enabling real-time visibility without the need for direct line-of-sight scanning.
