Protecting the Star – Mercedes-Benz’s Global Fight Against Fakes

This article describes the strategic approach of Mercedes-Benz – one of the world’s most iconic brand names – to ensuring the authenticity and safety of its automotive components.

Counterfeiting remains a persistent global challenge, and the automotive industry is no exception. Counterfeit automotive parts – from brake pads and airbags to filters and spark plugs – often fail under stress, sometimes with catastrophic results.

According to the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), counterfeiting in Germany’s mechanical engineering sector causes annual losses of around €4.1 billion, together with the loss of about 16,000 jobs. Nearly 46% of German mechanical and plant engineering firms have reported counterfeiting incidents in the past two years.

Against this backdrop, Mercedes-Benz’s brand protection and IP enforcement programmes combine advanced technology, global coordination, and close cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
