Applied DNA Exits Authentication Business

After years of inconsistent demand, Applied DNA Sciences (ADNAS) has decided to discontinue its DNA tagging and security services business. This decision is part of a broader restructuring effort that includes a 20% reduction in workforce, mainly in the DNA tagging segment.

ADNAS’ authentication offering includes SigNature® DNA, Beacon®, and the CertainT® platform.

SigNature DNA is a forensic-grade authentication technology that employs encrypted DNA markers.

Beacon provides a rapid in-field authentication system compatible with SigNature DNA. A proprietary swab and UV light reveal a hidden marker, enabling quick and reliable verification without requiring laboratory analysis.

The CertainT platform ensures product authenticity and helps brands track raw materials, such as cotton, pharmaceuticals, and synthetic fibres, from origin to the final product.

The rise and fall

ADNAS has explored various industries over the years. Long ago, it partnered with Thomas Greg & Sons, a South American security printer, to participate in a currency and security printing pilot programme. The company also made advocacy efforts to persuade the US federal government to adopt its DNA taggant for authenticating defence electronics components.
