TOPPAN Showcases Smart NFC Packaging Solutions

The tag uses NXP® Semiconductors’ NTAG® 22x DNA StatusDetect, a revolutionary chip for NFC with capacitance measurement capability. By leveraging proprietary label design technology and equipping the tag with an NFC antenna and capacitive structure for detecting liquid inside the container, TOPPAN has made it possible to detect liquid by simply using a smartphone. The tag can be read without a power source because electricity is generated and flows via electromagnetic induction from the smartphone.

With this NFC tag, users can quickly check the volume of liquid remaining in containers whose contents cannot be seen. Companies adopting it will also be able to provide consumers with various customer engagement services, such as content linked to the volume of liquid left in bottles and guidance on additional purchases.

TOPPAN also demonstrated its cloud- based product ID authentication platform in collaboration with Belgian company Selinko. The solution involves assigning unique IDs to individual products to enable the status of each one to be managed and tracked on the platform.

As a technology for digitally proving a product’s authenticity, the solution was featured in the 2023 Luxury and Technology report issued by the Comité Colbert Association of French luxury brands and Bain & Company.

Lastly, TOPPAN addressed the current demand for plastic-free products by developing a tag in which the polyethene terephthalate (PET) substrate material has been replaced by paper, without sacrificing communication performance.

New company structure

On 1 October, the company changed its name for the first time since its founding in 1900. TOPPAN Inc is now TOPPAN Holdings Inc, which means it has transitioned to a holding company structure.

Businesses operating under the former TOPPAN Inc have been transferred to two new operating companies: TOPPAN Inc (same name) and TOPPAN Digital Inc. In addition, the security subdivision of the former TOPPAN Inc was integrated with Toppan Forms in April this year, and the combined entity has made a fresh start as TOPPAN Edge Inc.

Other subsidiaries include Toppan Gravity, which serves as the international development arm of the Toppan group in the security domain.
