Smurfit Appointed ID Issuer for Tobacco Traceability in Ireland
Smurfit Westrock Security Concepts (SWSC), the Irish high-security printing and identity management solutions provider, has been awarded a contract by Revenue Commissioners (Revenue), Ireland, to provide 110-150 million unique identification codes per year for all tobacco related products imported and sold in the country.
The solution involves the creation of a secure, scalable, and compliant platform to generate, issue, and manage ID codes for the tobacco products themselves, as well as for the economic operators, facilities, and machines involved in the tobacco supply chain. The codes ensure full traceability of products in line with the EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), which all 27 member states must comply with.
SWSC (which was formed last year through the merger of Smurfit Kappa and Westrock, a large US packaging company) is the prime contractor for the solution, serving as local partner, host of the irelandidissuer.ie website, and provider of contract management services to Revenue and economic operators.
