EUIPO Advances 2025 Strategic Vision for IP Protection

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) is actively advancing its Strategic Plan 2030, which aims to build a strong, inclusive, and sustainable intellectual property (IP) system across Europe. A recent milestone in this effort was a high-level conference held on 1-2 July 2025, co-hosted with the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) at EUIPO’s headquarters in Alicante, Spain.

Organised in partnership with the Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights, the two-day event brought together over 50 enforcement officials from customs, police, and market surveillance authorities across EU member states, as well as international stakeholders.

Action against FMCG counterfeiting

The conference's primary focus was to align national and regional enforcement strategies to combat the growing threat of IP crime in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). These goods encompass everyday items such as food, beverages, personal care products, and household essentials – sectors of significant economic and social value.

In 2022 alone, the EU’s FMCG sector recorded €714.5 billion in sales, with €174.8 billion in exports, according to the European Brand Association (AIM). The scale and visibility of this sector make it a prime target for counterfeiters, leading to economic losses, tax evasion, and health risks for consumers.
