G+D Launches Smart Label for Supply Chain Tracking
International security technology group Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) has launched the G+D Smart Label, a second-generation tracking solution that transforms any package into an IoT (Internet of Things) device.
The first generation of the smart label was launched in 2023, in the form of a paper-thin tracking device.
It was launched by Pod Group (a G+D subsidiary), in partnership with SODAQ and Lufthansa Industry Solutions. The device allowed for tracking small and lightweight items – something not previously possible with traditional devices (see Authentication & Brand News™ June 2023).
The 2mm thick smart label featured a printed battery for minimal weight.
It used the low-power cellular 5G connectivity standard (LTE CAT-M) to send data on device location and temperature back to a centralised dashboard. This enabled logistics companies to track valuable goods, from something as small and light as a vital document to something as large as a full-sized oil painting.
The new Smart Label is 3.4mm thick and slightly larger than a credit card (107mm x 72mm). It has been jointly developed by G+D in conjunction with hardware partner, Sensos, to enable cost-effective, accurate location tracking for various applications. These include parcel delivery and shipping, fleet management and monitoring the movement of luxury goods.
