Australia’s Postal Service Uses AI Tool to Tackle Fake Stamps

Australia Post has launched a new AI counterfeit detection tool to address the problem of fraudulent postage products sold online.

While no information is available on who is providing this tool, sources indicate that this technology authenticates stamps, stamped satchels, and prepaid satchels purchased online, automatically flagging counterfeit items and providing near-real-time analytics.

According to the postal service, the system has already identified hundreds of fake products and successfully removed several million dollars’ worth of counterfeit postage from online marketplaces.

Kevin Zuccato, General Manager of Group Security at Australia Post, expressed serious concern over the rise in counterfeit postage. He warned that individuals involved in producing, selling, or using fake products could face legal action.

‘Counterfeit postal products aren’t new, but we’re seeing a significant increase in their circulation’, Zuccato stated. ‘Our new tool allows us to efficiently identify and promptly remove these fraudulent products from online platforms’.

Australia Post’s anti-counterfeiting efforts include collaboration with the Australian Border Force to intercept counterfeit goods before they reach consumers. Confiscated items are analysed at a dedicated facility to identify quality differences and verify security features, such as watermarks.
