EU Authorities Seize 3.1 Million Pills During Operation SHIELD VI
For the sixth consecutive year, the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) has facilitated the efforts of customs authorities from 14 EU member states in cracking down on illicit pharmaceutical products, with the latest coordinated enforcement action – Operation SHIELD VI – leading to the seizure of more than 3.1 million pills across the bloc.
In addition to the seized pills, enforcement authorities confiscated 104,000 packages of illicit goods, more than 23,000 ampoules and flasks, and over one tonne of illegal substances.
Participating countries included Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Spain, along with Italy’s Guardia di Finanza.
Although this year’s results were slightly lower than last year’s 3.4 million pill seizures, authorities emphasise that the operation increasingly focuses on dismantling criminal networks and online distribution channels, rather than purely counting seized products. Recent operations have included investigations into organised crime groups, the closure of illicit websites and the dismantling of clandestine laboratories involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit pharmaceuticals.
