Carolina Saravia: Career Civil Servant and Chile’s New Tax Chief
Tax Stamp & Traceability News™ readers may remember Carolina Saravia from the 2024 article ‘Chile’s Tobacco Traceability System Uncovers Illicit Production in Santiago’.
At the time, Ms Saravia had announced that the traceability system, implemented by SICPA for Chile’s tax authority Servicio de Impuestos Internos (SII), had been instrumental in allowing SII to identify a company that was illegally manufacturing cigarettes within the country. The resulting legal complaint filed by SII led to the eventual shutting down of this illicit operation.
‘We will use all the tools provided by current Chilean legislation to combat tax evasion, informality, and avoidance, all of which have a negative impact on our society,’ she said at the time.
Ms Saravia officially took office as Acting Director of SII on 31 July 2025, following the resignation of Javier Etcheberry.
Her appointment as head of the agency marks a milestone, in that she is a career civil servant as opposed to a presidential appointee, with 25 years’ experience at the institution.
